Event Description and Format |

A TOTAL OF 32 MEDALS -- 16 for men and women -- are awarded in the
swimming competition, which will be conducted in a 50-meter pool at the
Sydney International Aquatic Center from September 16-23.
The races consist of four basic strokes -- freestyle, backstroke,
breaststroke and butterfly -- contested at various distances. The fastest
eight swimmers in each event advance from the preliminary rounds to the
final.
Men's and women's medals will be awarded in the 50-meter freestyle,
100-meter freestyle, 200-meter freestyle, 400-meter freestyle, 100-meter
backstroke, 200-meter backstroke, 100-meter breaststroke, 200-meter
breaststroke, 100-meter butterfly, 200-meter butterfly, 200-meter
individual medley, 400-meter individual medley, 4x100-meter freestyle
relay, 4x200-meter freestyle relay and 4x100-meter medley relay.
The men compete in the 1,500 meter freestyle and the women have a
freestyle race at 800 meters.
Two additional medals will be awarded to women in synchronized
swimming, which consists of judged events for duets and teams.
