Event Description and Format |

The Olympic soccer tournament is a round-robin format that will take
place between September 13-30. Preliminary matches begin September
13, two days before Opening Ceremonies.
Matches will take place at Bruce Stadium, the Melbourne Cricket
Ground, the Brisbane Cricket Ground, Hindmarsh Stadium and the
Sydney Football Stadium.
Sixteen men's teams play three games in the first round followed by
quarterfinals and two medal rounds. Team's compete in four four-team
groups with the top two in each advancing to the quarterfinals.
First-round games can end in ties, but the final three rounds will be
decided by penalty-kick shootouts.
Women will compete in Olympic soccer for the second time, with eight
teams making up two four-team groups. After a three-game round-robin
competition, the top two teams in each group advance to the semifinals.
There are no restrictions on women's teams, but each men's team is limited
to players under the age of 23 with three over-age exemptions.
