Event Description and Format |

The men's and women's Olympic basketball tournament each features 12
teams in two groups. All games will be played at The Dome.
Each group will play the other five teams in its group, with the top four
teams in each group advancing to the quarterfinals and the others playing
for ninth to 12th place.
Group A in the men's competition features the United States, Lithuania,
New Zealand, China, France and Italy. Group B is comprised of
Australia, Russia, Angola, Canada, Spain and Yugoslavia.
The women's Group A contains Slovakia, Senegal, Canada, Australia,
France and Brazil, while Group B has the United States, Russia, New
Zealand, South Korea, Cuba and Poland.
The men's semifinals will take place September 29, and the medal games
October 1. The women's semifinals are September 29, and the medal
games September 20.
The tournament will be played under international rules that differ from
those of the NBA. Most notably, balls bouncing on the rim after a shot
may be touched and only a team's coach may call a time-out.
